How to Style a Menswear Inspired Look

If you’ve hung out around Blondes & Bagels for oh, I don’t know, five minutes you already know I love me some menswear. Basically I love anything with a tomboy edge. I’m not a big dress wearer, I can’t remember the last time I wore a skirt, and I’m addicted to broken in tees and sneakers.

But like, in a cute way.

One of my BFFs likes to call my style “androgynous” which I wasn’t super into at first but I’m wholeheartedly embracing it. Because – she’s not wrong. I love pieces that look like they came straight out of my boyfriend’s closet.

That being said – it’s hard to literally pull pieces straight out of your boyfriend’s closet. There is such a thing as too much manspiration. Instead I’ve come up with my foolproof formula for how to get a menswear inspired look – without the actual menswear.

Nailed it.

P.S. can someone please find me a tee that says “nailed it” because it’s basically my tagline at this point.

Invest in a classic button down.

Nothing says menswear like a classic button down shirt. I’m into neutrals – and so are most men – so I recommend picking out classic colors for this classic piece. White, black, grey, or blue button downs tend to look the most clean and expensive (even if it only cost you $20).

One of my fave places to shop for button downs is Abercrombie.

I KNOW. OMG WE HAVEN’T TALKED ABOUT ABERCROMBIE SINCE 2009.

But seriously guys. Abercrombie is coming back in a big way. They’ve finally started making black clothes (can I get an AMEN) and are a great place to find closet staples on sale.

Not even sponsored – I’ve just been shopping their sale section like crazy lately and I’m super into it. I’ve linked some of the button downs I have my eyeballs on for you below.

Opt for a structured bag.

Nothing reads menswear and edgy like a good structured bag. Structured bags actually just rock in general because they basically say you mean business.

I’ve been all about satchels lately. Ever since my Pochette Metis fell apart I had been dying to find a satchel to fill its place. I debated over the classic cambridge satchel but never fully fell in love. I saw this Gigi New York satchel on one of my fave bloggers and had to have it (although TBH it was majorly on sale at the time I bought it).

If you’re not into the satchel look – any structured bag will do!

Pair with distressed denim.

Boys love their jeans. And gosh darnit so do I.

Distressed jeans add an extra edge to just about any outfit, but I love them with menswear looks. The pair I’m wearing is crazy distressed – way more than I usually go for. But for this look I’m feelin’ it.

Add feminine details.

Sure, I like to wear outfits inspired by the boys – but I love the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine. There’s something crazy sexy about a girl who rocks menswear and manages to make it feminine.

Definitely not saying I fall into this category but it’s 100% the look I aspire to. Remember when Kourtney Kardashian showed up to a Great Gatsby party not in a flapper dress, but dressed as Gatsby himself?

GOALS.

Kourt kept her look feminine by adding a bold lip color. Seriously, she nailed it.

In my look here I chose a shirt that had the option for a “pussy bow” tie. I also chose rose gold accessories (which actually is my Fitbit I decked out with an affordable rose gold band from Amazon).

You guys I’m seriously so happy I’ve stopped pretending I enjoy wearing skirts and shit. I want to say major apologies if my outfits aren’t all that exciting – but also I’m kind of sorry I’m not sorry if ya know what I mean.

We get one life guys – it’s a total waste of time pretending to love things you don’t love or to be someone you’re not.

Even when it comes to fashion.

Raise your hand and give me a holler in the comments if you’re into menswear like I am!
